I’ve searched and still can’t find the precise reason for it. But it’s always puzzled me. Why’s it elongated like that?

I can only suppose it has something to do with the angle it’s viewed at. It doesn’t seem to be based on speed, because the standard is six feet in height.

But who determined the optimal amount of stretch needed for proper recognition by a driver? That’s what I want to know.

I have other questions of course, but let’s just start with that.
